The mast is a vertical assembly which is responsible for raising and lowering the load. The mast of a lift truck comprises interlocking rails to be able to give some lateral steadiness. These rails are guided by rollers or brushings.

The masts on forklifts utilize metal plates to be able to move merchandise and are driven by hydraulic systems. Hydraulics is defined by the transmission of power which uses pressurized fluid, which in this instance is oil. A swing mast is a forklift mast that can turn 90 degrees in one direction. The design allows the swing mast to operate efficiently in constricted aisles.
